Among the most dangerous home toxins known to man, radon is considered a silent killer. It comes from the decay of uranium, radium, thorium and other naturally occurring radioactive elements found in granites, and some sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
This gas is undetectable by the human senses and contributes to over 20,000 deaths each year in the United States. Exposure to radon is the number one cause of lung cancer deaths in non-smokers, and the second leading cause overall.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified radon as a Group 1 Carcinogen. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) radon potential zones map, most areas in Virginia fall under high risk and moderate radon potentials. Radon has been found in Fairfax, VA, and many people have already suffered the ill effects of this naturally occuring gas.
As such, it’s crucial to have your home tested for radon levels by a professional tester like Radon Defense. We have trained, skilled, and certified experts who use the most up to date equipment and practices to measure, and when needed mitigate levels of radon gas. Call us today for and one of our team members will be happy to talk to answer any questions you have or assist in scheduling of our services.
How does Radon get into your house?
Radon can seep into your Fairfax home from exposed dirt under the house through cracks and holes in the foundation. The lowest livable spaces in a Fairfax home, such as basements, have the highest levels of radon. No basement? That doesn’t mean that you are safe from radon, radon can find it’s way into all homes that have contact with the ground, whether that be a poured basement, a slab on grade foundation with no basement, or a house built on an enclosed crawl space.
Radon can also enter your home through well water. Radon in Water is not as commonly talked about in the Fairfax area, due in part to the lack of companies with the capabilities to test for it like Radon Defense, and the lack of knowledge to the potential that the water they drink, shower, or cook with can also have negative health risks if not properly taken care of.
How much does Radon testing cost?
To determine if your Fairfax home has radon levels above the EPA Action/Recommendation levels, a professional like Radon Defense is here to complete the tests.
Certified professionals at Radon Defense use certified passive electret tests to guarantee accurate results. Moreover, we schedule our testing of short-term tests (between 2 and 7 days) to avoid severe storms or any other foreseen weather patterns, because high sustained winds, heavy precipitation and low-pressure systems might cause a spike in radon levels.

We recommend using professional testers because DIY testing kits can be inaccurate and take much longer to receive the results.
At Radon Defense, we have the capability to deploy multiple tests daily, the ability to schedule test deployments next day and results turn around within hours of retrieval as needed.
Radon Mitigation Solutions
According to the EPA (U.S Environmental Protection Agency), the radon action level is 4.0 PCi/L (picocuries per liter of air). Any tests with results above this level require fast mitigation. Indoor radon levels are reduced through radon mitigation systems.
Outdoor radon levels are about 0.4 pCi/L, and the average radon concentration in homes is 1.25 pCi/L. Although radon concentration levels under 2.0 pCi/L are preferred, reducing them from 4.0 pCi/L to under 2.0pCi/L is no easy feat.
Radon Defense uses professional radon mitigation system installation techniques to install multiple types of radon systems:
- Sub-slab depressurization, for homes with slab on grade concrete floors, and basements
- Passive radon system activation, for homes with builder installed passive vent stacks
- Sub-membrane depressurization, for homes with crawl spaces
- Radon in water mitigation, for homes with well water
- Active Radon dilution, for the difficult to mitigate homes where other methods may not be the most effective.
Give us a call today, and we will gladly help in determining the best solution for your Fairfax Home. Radon Defense offers affordable radon testing and mitigation services without altering the quality.
Does opening the windows reduce radon?
Opening the windows will improve air circulation in the house, which helps to dilute radon concentration in the house temporarily. So, while you may notice reduced accumulation of radon when the windows are closed, the levels return to normal about 12 hours after closing the windows.
Also, in theory, leaving windows open might increase radon testing levels in your home. This is because opening the windows creates a pressure difference between the soil and the house which causes more radon gas to be sucked into your living space.
Test your home and keep your family safe
Given that radon is a colorless and odorless gas, radon testing is the surest way of safeguarding your family from the dangerous health effects of radon. We recommend getting a radon test before a real estate transaction. However, you can schedule a consultation or inspection with our experienced, trained, and certified radon testers even after you’ve moved in.
Let us help you free your home from the potential dangers of radon gas.
